John Ruaridh Grant Mackenzie

Born 12 June 1948 in Strathpeffer, Lord Cromartie was educated at Rannoch School and Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Scotland from which he graduated with a geology degree. He has a considerable interest in matters explosive having worked for Explosive Developments Ltd and becoming a Member of the Institute of Explosive Engineers in the 1980s, serving for many years on the Council and as the Editor of ‘Explosives Engineering’. Past President of both the Mountaineering Council of Scotland (now called Mountaineering Scotland) and the Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) Lord Cromartie has authored two climbing guides to the Cuillin of Skye, published by the Scottish Mountaineering Trust (SMT) and co-authored a book on Agates. He has managed Cromartie Estate since 1989 and developed a growing tourist infrastructure. An active member of the UK Parliament, House of Lords from 1989 to 1999 he is a Member of IMCSE and has been Patron since 2013.
